2017 National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo Announces Winners

The 2017 National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo (NICEE) held its largest ever celebration of K-12 youth invention and entrepreneurship at the headquarters of the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA on June 1-3, 2017. More than 800 students, parents, chaperones, judges, sponsors, volunteers and staff participated in the event.  NICEE is an invitation-only event; the 304 student competitors had won underlying competitions across the U.S. to receive an invite to the event.

Sixteen states were represented at NICEE 2017:  California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington State, Connecticut’s delegation was the largest at 91 students.  More than 120 online and onsite judges provided their expertise and mentoring to the competition.

NICEE 2017 was sponsored by United Technologies; Stanley Black, & Decker; Lemelson Foundation; Paul G. Allen Foundation; Arrow Electronics; The Henry Ford; Cantor Colburn; Becton, Dickinson and Company; Microsoft; Adobe; American Geosciences Institute; Washington Homeland Security Roundtable; Chicago Toy & Game Week; Central Coast Patent Agency; Charles Koch Foundation; Maxim Integrated; Learntoprogram.TV; CA Technologies; IDEAZ USA; and Macy’s.

A total of 52 individual awards were presented.  The Best-Of-Show 2017 Student Innovator of the Year Award, presented by The Henry Ford, went to Kameryn Galland, Erin Higgins, and Skye Roberts — a team from Erma Siegel Elementary School in Murfreesboro, TN — for their E-Z Swingsuit invention — a safety vest that allows handicapped students to swing on swingsets with their peers.  The Most Innovative Award, presented by Stanley Black & Decker, went to Katie Barry from JC Booth Middle School in Fayetteville, GA, for her Locker Hammock invention to ease storage in school lockers.
